Resetting the code of your ADT alarm system is a very important process that one has to undertake for him or her to enhance the security of his or her home or business. Another major weakness in the ADT home security system is that the default factory code is simple to crack. In this article, the process of changing the master code and new user codes on the wired/wireless ADT alarm keypads will be outlined in detail.

Firstly, you would have to reach the programming mode of your home alarm system. Here, the procedures differ according to whether the modem is hard-wired or wireless.

For a wired alarm system, identify the main alarm control panel box. The main alarm control panel box is the main unit of the alarm system that is connected to other components such as the siren, door/window contacts, and motion sensors. As explained earlier, you can open it by unscrewing the screw or pulling a sliding panel at the front of the device. When you open this you will find basic numeric buttons from 0 to 9 and some other command buttons like Stay, Away, Chime, Reset, Exit, and some lights that indicate some conditions.

This process is accomplished with a wireless alarm system by using the numerical keypad that is installed on the wall as opposed to opening an alarm system panel box.

Now to enter programming mode:

Wired System: Of course, to access the ‘hidden’ menu, you need to press the 8 and 0 buttons simultaneously and hold until the logo appears. The Armed indicator light will glow steadily and flash quickly for approximately 3 seconds indicating that the device is now in programming mode.

Wireless System: Subtract 8 from the 4-digit master code and then press the keys + 0 + # simultaneously. One of the indicators to show that you have entered the programming code interface mode is the Ready light which blinks at a slow rate.

Once Follow these steps to change the existing master code:

  1. Press 1. The indicator light will go on steady for a second if wired or the Ready light will blink on for wireless systems.
  2. Please input the new 4-digit master code that must be set instead of the existing one.
  3. To confirm the new 4-digit master code, re-enter it. It makes a beeping sound once to confirm that the new master code has been successfully programmed into the keypad.

To exit programming mode:

Wired systems: They all have to push the Exit button.

Wireless systems: Toward the top of the touchtone phone press the “*” button.

It is now time to change the master code. From now on disarm the system by entering your new master code.

Similar steps can be used to change existing user codes or add secondary user codes:

  1. Programming mode (see steps above, Enter)
  2. Press 2. Ready light will be on or the Indicator will flash.
  3. Input the two-digit code number for the user you want to include or modify on the system (from 03-48 on wired and 01-49 on wireless).
  4. Please, input the new 4-digit user code for that slot.
  5. Type in the new 4-digit user code when prompted and then retype it for confirmation.
  6. Continue steps 2-5 for other codes associated with different users if any.
  7. Exit programming mode

The user code(s) are now added or changed. Ensure that anyone who would require that code is aware of the new 4-digit sequence to input. It is also necessary to replace any physical remote key fobs that have been programmed with the old codes.

Tips When Changing Alarm Codes:

  • Never put different user codes that the other person can easily understand
  • A code should be 4 numbers only For example do not try to input a PIN with more or fewer numbers
  • It should be noted that all the current user codes must be written down and placed in a secure place in case of memory loss.
  • All codes should be changed every 6 months to make sure they cannot be cracked by any unauthorized personnel.

You have indeed altered the factory codes that were embedded in your ADT alarm system, which is a very effective step toward enhancing the security of your home. Configuration is rather easy in both the wired and the wireless systems of the networks. It takes only a couple of minutes to change and add the user codes when in programming mode. Use this guide each time you are looking forward to altering any master or user access code.
