A Ring doorbell camera is a smart home device that functions like a traditional doorbell but offers HD video streaming and bidirectional communication capabilities. It is easy to self-install a Ring doorbell, and it would only take less than an hour with basic tools. Below are the instructions on how to install different models of Ring doorbell cameras.
Before You Begin
Before you start the installation process, ensure that Ring is compatible with the existing doorbell wiring that is currently installed. The wiring has to supply powers of 16-24 VAC from a transformer. In the case where you have no doorbell wires, then you have to get one or go for a battery-operated Ring model instead.
You also have to ensure that you have a good network signal at the doorâs location because people usually stay connected to the Internet through a Wi-Fi connection. Ring device uses Wi-Fi to stream videos and also receive notifications through the home internet connection. Check the Wi-Fi signals in your phone to ensure that you have sufficient signals.
Gather the necessary tools and materials:
- Ring doorbell camera
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Phillips screwdriver
- Drill with 3/16 inch drill bit (if mounting into stucco or brick)
- Pencil
- Level
- Hammer
- Wire strippers
Choose Mounting Location
Select the most suitable position near the door at eye level to mount your preferred option. Take into account the FOV of the camera to be able to have a good and clear view of visitors. It is also important not to orient the camera towards the sun as this will cause glare and bad video quality.
If connecting to existing doorbell wires, this will somewhat determine the position to be taken. Ensure whether the location has an existing doorbell or if there are low voltage wires behind the doorbell.
Prepare Doorbell Wires
To begin with, one should switch off the power supply of the doorbell wires from the breaker box to eliminate the risk of getting an electric shock. If present use the screwdriver to uninstall your old doorbell and also detach the wires if any. Remove approximately half an inch of insulation from each of the wires with the help of wire strippers. If you have a digital multimeter, check wires have 16-24 VAC power.
Install Mounting Bracket
Position the Ring mounting bracket at the desired location. Make sure that the level is straight before placing it to mark the screw holes using a pencil. For the wooden surfaces, it is possible to pre-drill some pilot holes into the marks to make screws easier to install. To drill holes for brick or stucco, the 3/16-inch masonry drill is recommended.
Insert the bracket into the position that covers the holes and then use the right screws. The Ring bracket is supplied as sheet metal or long wood screws. It depends on which type of wall you have, use the one that will best suit your wall material to fasten the bracket properly.
Connect Wires to Ring Doorbell
Take wires that are present on the existing doorbell and fit them into the corresponding terminals at the back of the Ring. Normally you would have a wire from the front/doorbell button connected to the terminal Front and the wire from the transformer to the Trans terminal. Tight but not too tight to damage the terminal screws.
Snap-on Faceplate
Insert the Ring faceplate into the bracket, slide it to the right position, and snap it into place. Ensure that the wire is on the bottom going through the hole and the camera is in the right position as you desire.
Connect and Configure in App
You can now reconnect the wires which may allow you to turn on the power to the doorbell wires at the circuit breaker. The Ring device will turn on.
Install the Ring app on your mobile device, if you have not used Ring before, then you will register for an account to access Ring. To set up a Ring device, select the device in the app and follow the on-screen prompts to connect the device to Wi-Fi and link it to the Ring account. This allows for features such as viewing from a distance, receiving motion alerts, capturing videos, and many more advanced options.
In the Ring app, you can change the motion detection sensitivity, set up notifications, allow other people to use Ring, and turn on video recordings for Ringâs cloud subscription services if wanted for easy access to video history and for sharing.
And that is it! You have now completed the process of installing and configuring your Ring video doorbell system with the wired power option. You will now be able to see, hear, speak, and record video of any visitor that approaches your door for security and efficiency.
Mounting a Battery-Powered Ring Doorbell Camera
The only notable difference when installing a battery-powered Ring doorbell camera is that you do not require any wires. Besides that, the mounting process is like the wired models. It is just important to check the batteries every couple of months.
Here are condensed steps for installing a Ring doorbell camera running on internal battery instead of wired connection: Here are condensed steps for installing a Ring doorbell camera running on internal battery instead of wired connection:
Select your desired mounting location which should be within Wi-Fi range. Place the bracket where you want the hooks to be and then put the level on it to make sure it is not tilted. If mounting on stucco, brick, or concrete, mark pilot holes and drill them.
Fit screws into the screw bracket as a screw and tighten them properly into position.
Remove the battery from the Ring device case holder which is installed at the factory. Place the bottom lip of the ring on the bracket opening and the top part of the ring should click into the bracket.
Replace the battery and make sure that it is securely plugged in and the cover is securely in place.
Setting up the Ring app: it is necessary to connect the device to Wi-Fi and then follow further instructions to set up and sync with the Ring account.
That will take care of all the procedures that are necessary to learn for installing and setting up a battery-operated Ring doorbell camera model at your home. Feel secure and intelligent to have a video doorbell technology right at your front door.
