Among its products, Vivint has wireless doorbell cameras, which are easy to fit and offer protection and comfort. However, there may be a need to uninstall the Vivint doorbell camera either because you are relocating or just want to replace it. It is quite easy to uninstall a Vivint doorbell camera, and you can do it yourself within just a few minutes, and without any prior experience in this field, and/or with the use of only basic tools.

What You Need?

Before removing your Vivint doorbell camera, make sure you have the following tools on hand:

  • A screwdriver with an inch size head containing Phillips screws
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Examples of objects that require a dry cloth or towel include;
  • A replacement doorbell camera (if the person wishes to add one).

Preparation

Before taking the doorbell camera off the wall, do a bit of preparation first:

So, the circuit for the Doorbell could be interrupted at the transformer itself by a switch, which will disconnect the Doorbell bell. This makes it possible to turn off the doorbell camera and this makes it safe to remove it. Find where your transformer box is usually located and that is usually beneath the chime box. Remove any cables leading to the doorbell camera in a manner that will deny it power supply.

Sign out from the Vivint App Now open your Vivint mobile app, go to the menu and click on devices => doorbell, then control your doorbell. Click on ‘Unlink Device’ to ensure that you are no longer connected before going ahead and deleting it.

Check Camera Positioning Make sure you pay attention to exactly how your camera is oriented in a way that means that you will be able to install the replacement in the future. Be mindful of where the camera is pointing and facing and from what height or distance it is placed.

Remove Screws

With the preparation done, you are now able to unscrew the doorbell camera from the wall of your home.

  1. So the first step is to unscrew the two exterior screws using the screwdriver. These aid in fixing the backplate and the mount bracket to the wall firmly. Just slowly unscrew them and place them aside.
  2. Then take out the longer middle screw, which connects the camera housing to the backplate of the camera. Gently unscrew this screw:
  3. When the middle screw is turned counterclockwise, you should slightly pry open the camera housing from the back plate to about midway. As a safety precaution, make sure to be very delicate in handling and not to pull any wires.
  4. The two connector wires connect the backplate and the camera housing as well. These wires should be delicately removed to make the camera housing come off completely.

Remove the Backplate from the Wall

In this state, even the camera portion itself no longer exists, but what remains on the wall is just the backplate and cables. To detach from the wall:

  1. Slide the gasket out of the backplate to reveal wiring, if necessary.
  2. Remove the two wires that originate from the backplate and connect to your doorbell circuit. In some cases, you may have to use needle nose pliers to get a good grip.
  3. Find the top and bottom retaining tabs on the backplate of the smartphone. Put pressure on the retaining tabs gently at the same time push the plate and pull it away from the wall. Work slowly.
  4. More so, once the retaining tabs are depressed enough to allow it, the backplate can be removed from the wall. Sliding it down carefully, withdraw it from the wall.

This is a routine check to ensure that the new camera is in good condition and ready to be used.

Now all the physical parts of the doorbell camera have been completely dismantled, it’s time to get ready for the new one.

  1. As for the wiring, check for the old wiring and connectors. Ensure that any wire that is copper is not exposed or else connectors are not damaged during removal to a point that they will have to be repaired before the installation of a replacement camera.
  2. Here are some basic steps for the installation of the new Vivint or any other doorbell camera, always follow the instructions manual that comes with the product. Include wiring diagrams, screw placement, positioning formats, and app connectivity directions.
  3. If installing a new doorbell camera system is completely different, make sure you have the chime kit and the transformer, and understand where the connection of the wires is going to be.

Install Replacement Camera

When ready with replacement camera system:

  1. Connect the wires as follows: Pair existing outdoor doorbell wires with new camera wires and join them securely with wire nuts.
  2. Press firmly back securely onto the wall while making sure that the retaining tabs click into the corresponding slots. Make sure there are no spaces between the underside of the plate and the wall.
  3. Place the middle screw on the camera housing so that it could be installed onto the backplate without stripping the screws.
  4. Bend housing connector wires to rejoin backplate wires. Wires only go in one specific way to plug into a device with ease.
  5. When wires are all plugged back in, the camera is correctly seated back on the backplate, install outer anchor screws to fasten the entire system to the wall. Screw tightly but be careful not to put too much force on the head that it cracks the housing.
  6. There are certain guidelines that you need to follow when you want to connect your new camera to your Vivint application and check the operation of motion sensors. Sometimes, change the height and orientation of the camera in a manner that has an appropriate view of occupants coming through the doors.
  7. Remount the rubber gasket around the camera backplate again to add more sealing against the worse weather and that is it!
  8. As mentioned before, Vivint’s doorbell cameras are a little tricky to uninstall but by doing all of the steps above correctly, one can uninstall and replace the doorbell camera safely on a DIY basis. Be cautious while disconnecting the wires, and while removing the parts from the wall gently so that different parts of the camera can be reused later. Make sure to have another camera ready to be installed to return the entrance security and comfort without disruption as soon as possible.
