Perceived safety in the city or town that an individual resides in is an important consideration most people give before choosing a place to live in. Reduced crime incidences, secure environments, and confidence in the police contribute to the safety of society. For this year’s ranking, we searched for cities and towns in the United States with a population of more than 20,000 residents, and the list of 100 safest cities in 2023 was determined.
What can be regarded as the Basic Principles of a Safe City?
So, to rank our list of the safest cities we used the latest FBI Uniform Crime Report data with a focus on violent and property crime rates per 1,000 people for all the cities in the United States. For a city to be included we excluded any that did not report a full year’s statistics to the FBI. Besides, the population density, size of the local police force, involvement of the community in combating the crimes, and other personal security assets were also taken into consideration.
The safest cities based on the above criteria, our top ten list of America's safest cities for 2023 includes:
1. Franklin, MA
2. Moorpark, CA
3. Johns Creek, GA
4. Beverly Hills, CA
5. Wayne, NJ
6. South Burlington, VT
7. Colonie, NY
8. Culver City, CA
9. Canton Township, MI
10. Milton, GA
The list of cities includes big cities and small ones represented in more than 30 states of the USA. Here are some other interesting highlights:
● California has the most number of cities on the list with 25 cities out of 50 considered as some of the safest cities in the US. Weather, citizens’ involvement, and the presence of active police forces account for relatively higher safety within many cities in the Golden State.
● It is also important to note that 22 cities from the Northeastern region of the United States are included in the analysis originating from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Many Northeast cities receive high ratings for safety due to low violent crimes per 1,000 residents, typically below 1%.
● Nine cities in both Texas and Michigan appeared in this year’s list of the safest. Housing that is reasonably priced; community watch organizations; and police forces that are attentive to the needs of residents increase safety across cities of both states.
● Other ten cities that ranked in the top one hundred include two cities each in Utah, Minnesota, Virginia Washington, Colorado, and North Carolina and it proves that safe communities exist in different regions of the country.
